Summary of the Book of
EXODUS
The second book of the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament. Meaning "departure," it chronicles the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, their journey through the wilderness, and their covenant with God at Mount Sinai.

Deliverance from Egypt
God hears the cries of His oppressed people and raises up a deliverer to challenge the mighty empire of Egypt.

Slavery in Egypt
Ch 1Generations after Joseph, a new Pharaoh fears the growing Israelite population, enslaving them and ordering the death of newborn Hebrew boys.
Birth of Moses
Ch 2Saved in a basket on the Nile, Moses is adopted by Pharaoh's daughter. Years later, he kills an Egyptian taskmaster and flees to Midian.
The Burning Bush
Ch 3-4God speaks to Moses from a burning bush that is not consumed, revealing His divine name "I AM" and commissioning Moses to free the Israelites.
Confronting Pharaoh
Ch 5-6Moses and his brother Aaron demand Pharaoh let God's people go. Pharaoh refuses and severely increases the Israelites' workload.

Chapters 7-12
The Ten Plagues
Ch 7-11God sends devastating plagues upon Egypt (blood, frogs, gnats, flies, livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness) to demonstrate His supremacy over the Egyptian gods.
The First Passover
Ch 12The final plague strikes the firstborn of Egypt. The Israelites are spared by placing the blood of a sacrificed lamb on their doorposts.
The Exodus Begins
Ch 12Broken by the final plague, Pharaoh finally commands the Israelites to leave. They depart Egypt in haste, marking the end of 430 years in Egypt.

The Wilderness & Sinai
God guides the freed nation through the desert to forge a sacred covenant and establish them as His holy people.

Chapters 13-18
Cloud and Fire
Ch 13God visibly guides the Israelites using a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
Parting the Red Sea
