DEUTERONOMY

The fifth and final book of the Pentateuch (Torah). Its name means "Second Law," as it consists of Moses' impassioned farewell addresses to the new generation of Israelites, renewing God's covenant with them right before they enter the Promised Land.

Remember the Past

He reminds them of their recent military victories against Kings Sihon and Og on the east side of the Jordan, proving that God is fighting for them.

A Call to Obedience

Ch 4
Moses passionately urges the new generation not to repeat their parents' mistakes. He warns against idolatry and pleads with them to keep God's statutes.

Part II

The Covenant Law

The core of the book. Moses explains what the laws given at Mount Sinai mean for this new generation preparing to build a society in Canaan.

Chapters 5-26

The Ten Commandments

Ch 5
Moses repeats the Ten Commandments, reminding the people that the covenant made at Sinai applies directly to them today, not just their ancestors.

The Shema

Ch 6
The foundational Jewish prayer: "Hear, O Israel." It commands the people to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength, and to teach this to their children constantly.

Exclusive Worship

Ch 7-13
Warnings against compromising with the Canaanite nations. Israel must destroy foreign altars and worship God only at the central sanctuary He will choose.

Civic and Social Laws

Ch 14-25
Detailed guidelines for daily life in the Promised Land. This includes laws concerning dietary purity, canceling debts, observing festivals, appointing judges, and rules for a future king.

Instructions for presenting the first harvest to God as an act of profound gratitude for rescuing them from slavery in Egypt and giving them a fertile land.

Covenant Renewal & Final Days

Moses forces the nation to make a definitive choice about their future before he passes his leadership to Joshua.

Chapters 27-34

Blessings and Curses

Ch 27-28
Moses dictates a ceremony to be held on Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. He lists the tremendous blessings for obedience and terrifying curses (including exile) for disobedience.

Choose Life

Ch 29-30
Moses formally renews the covenant with the people. He sets before them "life and death, blessing and curse" and passionately implores them to "choose life."

Joshua and The Song

Ch 31-32
Moses officially commissions Joshua as his successor. He then teaches Israel a prophetic song that will serve as a witness against them when they inevitably rebel in the future.

Death of Moses

Ch 33-34
Moses blesses each of the twelve tribes. He climbs Mount Nebo, where God shows him the Promised Land he cannot enter. Moses dies, and God Himself buries him.
